Leeds Community Stars - launching and organising awards event for social housing tenants

The Leeds Community Stars Awards were developed by Acceleris for the three Arm's Length Management Organisations (ALMOs) operating in Leeds: East North East Homes, West North West Homes, Aire Valley Homes, which together with the Belle Isle Tenant Management Organisation (TMO) manage 57,000 council properties for 100,000 residents across Leeds.

What we were asked to do

Acceleris developed the awards to recognise and celebrate the hard work of residents to improve their local community whether individually or through a group. The awards involved a unique partnership between three ALMOs and their shared services centre, Belle Isle TMO and Leeds Tenants Federation. Primarily funded by sponsorship sought from partner organisations, the awards ran from January to July 2012.

What we did

Acceleris devised a plan to include sponsorship generation, launch, nominations, shortlisting, judging and event. A list of potential partner organisations were drafted and approached with a detailed proposal of commercial benefits to support the initiative. ASDA, British Gas, Mears, Morrison and Leeds Tenant Federation agreed to support the project.

A launch image was produced and promotion of the event was created in the ALMO and BITMO newsletters, on an independent microsite and in regional press.

Nominations were encouraged for three months and all entries were shortlisted to five per category. A judging day was arranged with sponsor representatives to select a winner and two finalists per category. Prizes were sought from local organisations and included Jet2.com flights and Leeds Rhinos tickets. The event took place at Leeds Town Hall for 250 guests with local BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration hosting and the Lord Mayoress attending.

The result

£21,500 of sponsorship was generated to cover the costs associated with the project. The awards generated 77 nominations with a People’s Choice of 666 votes for the favourite finalist entry. 250 people attended the ceremony at the prestigious venue. The activity generated significant press coverage across regional and trade press with a readership of over 1,250,000.

"It was a pleasure to be involved in such an inspiring, well organised evening."
